Hoogte fotografie voor Height Specialists bij de Greenery

Enige tijd geleden ben ik weer eens op pad gegaan voor Height Specialists. Zij moesten bij The Greenery rope access schilderwerk uitvoeren. Dit was een perfect klusje waar rope access kan worden ingezet. Het was niet hoog, alleen de toegang was erg moeilijk. Het dak recht onder de schilderplek was absoluut niet dragend, dus daar mocht niks op komen te staan. De enige manier om er te komen was om vanaf boven een stel touwen uit te hangen en dan elke keer over te stappen van touwtje naar touwtje. En de enige manier om daar foto’s van te maken (dacht ik toen, later kwam ik erachter dat het ook anders had gekund..;-))was ook rope access. Fotograferen op hoogte, al was het hier niet echt hoog..

Qua fotografie was het ook redelijk uitdagend, om een beetje balans in de foto’s te krijgen. De lucht was namelijk een stuk lichter dan de donkere onderkant waar de jongens hingen. Om dat te compenseren heb ik gekozen om strobist te gaan fotograferen. Ik heb 2 flitsers gebruikt om de boel uit te lichten. Camera op manual en dan de lucht correct belichten (of iets onderbelichten). Dan de flitsers op een kwart of een half en per shot het juiste diafragma bepalen voor een correcte belichting. In plaats van een statieven neer te zetten, heb ik ze nu ondersteboven door de vloer laten hangen. Weer eens wat anders. Als ik dat niet gedaan zou hebben was het resultaat nogal “fletse” saaie foto’s geweest.
Het zou helemaal ideaal zijn als je vanuit de Pocketwizard op de camera kon kiezen welke flitsers je zou willen gebruiken. Bijvoorbeeld door de flitsers op verschillende kanalen te zetten en dan met de PW op de camera kiezen of je met beide kanalen wilt werken of met een enkele. Zeker in dit soort situaties, waar je alleen bent en ergens hangt dus niet in de mogelijkheid om even heen en weer te lopen.

Terwijl ik aan het fotograferen was hebben Joep en Mark wat foto’s van mij genomen. Wel leuk om te laten zien hoe ik er soms bij hang.. Omdat de jongens al het touw nodig hadden voor hun werk, kon ik me maar een klein stukje laten zakken. Dus dan maar ondersteboven hangen…

Some time ago I had a shoot for Height Specialists. They were asked to do some rope access painting at The Greenery. This was a typical rope access job. It wasn’t high, the access was just difficult. The roof underneath the platform was not load bearing, so the only way to paint the piping was to lower some ropes from the top and go from rope to rope. The only way to get a decent photo was also to use rope access techniques ( at least that’s what I thought…). Photography at height, allthough this wasn’t particularly high.

Photographically it was also a challenge to get a balanced shot. The air was a lot brighter than the underside of the platform where the guys were working. To create a balanced exposure between the light sky and dark platform I resorted to strobist photography. I used two flashes to light part of it. I put the camera and flashes on manual and measured on the camera for the sky (or sometimes underexposed it a bit). I put the flashes on 1/2 or 1/4 power (don’t really remember), and used my aperture to get a correct exposure on the subject. Instead of putting the flashes on stands I lowered the stands through the grating and hung them upside down. If I wouldn’t have used the flashes it would have resulted in kind of dull and boring photo’s.

Don’t get me wrong, I really like my Pocketwizards, but it woul be great if it was possible to select which flash I want to use from the Pocketwizaerd on the camera. Use one, two or none. Especially in these shoots where you’re hanging and there is no one to assist.

While I was busy climbing around and positioning myself, Mark and Joep found the time to take some photo’s of me doing my photography at height stuff. Because the guys needed all the available rope for the painting I was only able to lower myself a little bit. So the only way to get a decent photo was to go upside down.
